As early as 1866, the first black female to enlist in the Army was Cathay Williams.  Williams enlisted in the Army using the name William Cathay.  Williams was examined by an Army surgeon who determined the recruit was fit for duty and she served with the 38th U.S. Infantry and traveled throughout the West with her unit.  Then in 1917,  Loretta Walsh, as the first official enlisted woman of any branch of the military, when she joined the Navy.

As women have evolved over time, the roles of wife, mother, sister and friend have expanded to include Vice-President of the U.S., Admiral of Coast Guard,  Engineer, Attorney General, and Police Chief, just to name a few.  The empowerment of women to achieve whatever their minds could dream is largely responsible the society shift to embrace the change and the proliferation of a woman's power.  Thus, justifying the celebration of all women and encouraging young ladies to strive for greater.
